Avoiding Car Accidents
Most people don’t get into auto accidents except on very rare occasions. After going years without one it is easy to fall into the trap of just letting instincts handle everything. After all, you haven’t had an accident in decades, so you’ve proven you’re a good driver, right? Well, yes and no. It is easy to suddenly and without warning get jolted back into reality by hitting or being hit by another car. Follow these safety tips to avoid accidents, and hopefully your streak will last another few decades.
The first intersection out of my driveway has a stop sign. To the right there is a dip, and I’ve gotten into the habit of looking left and right twice, as in left-right-left-right. It is surprising how many times I’ll see a car coming on the second look to the right that I couldn’t see on the first. This is a good little habit to get into and if every driver did this, surely some accidents would be avoided.
Coming out of a diagonal parking spot in a large parking lot presents an opportunity for fender-benders or even more serious accidents despite the fact that no cars are moving fast. Most people faithfully look to the left and right before backing out, but it is also important to turn your body and look directly to the rear. You might see pedestrians walking by who are not paying attention to cars, or the car directly behind might be backing out at exactly the same time.
When making right turns at stop signs or stop lights, it is natural to take a quick look to the left to see if cars are approaching and if the coast is clear, and then immediately starting your turn to the right. It is best, however, also to look to the right before turning. There could be a pedestrian crossing the street, or a car might decide to make a U-turn. This goes back to the first tip where a quick look both ways twice is advised. Once again, after a while it will become a habit, and you’ll have a built in safety mechanism working for you.
How many drivers have turned their heads to check for blind spots before changing lanes in traffic and been surprised that there actually was a car next to them when they could have sworn there was not? It happens to everyone, and each time it does we are reminded that making that extra effort to be sure and not just trusting our side view mirrors and our instincts is the right thing to do.
